Nasal breathing and snoring

Nasal breathing and snoring are prevalent sleep-related issues that can significantly impact sleep quality. In my clinical practice, I frequently encounter patients who report difficulty breathing through their noses. The underlying cause of this issue is typically a deformation in the nasal cartilage and bone, known as septum deviation.

Septum deviation can arise from various factors, including genetic predisposition and nasal trauma experienced during childhood or adulthood. While some deviations may be more severe and necessitate surgical intervention, the decision to undergo surgery is primarily based on the patient's symptoms. If a patient experiences complete nasal breathing and discomfort, surgical recommendation may be considered.

It is crucial to acknowledge that the size of the nasal conchae, can also contribute to breathing difficulties. Allergies and smoking are common causes of nasal conchae enlargement and nasal mucosa irritation. Therefore, I emphasize to my patients that continuing to smoke or suffer from allergies after surgical intervention may adversely affect nasal breathing.

In instances of severe septum deviation, nasal breathing surgery is often the initial recommended treatment for patients experiencing snoring or sleep apnea. This is because nasal breathing is fundamental to overall health and well-being. However, it is essential to recognize that nasal breathing surgery may not completely eliminate snoring and apnea symptoms.
