Usage of Tampons in Nasal Surgeries

Patients undergoing nasal surgeries frequently express concerns regarding the use of tampons post-operatively. Historically, gauze strip tampons were employed, which resulted in discomfort for patients.

In contrast, silicone tampons are now the preferred choice, significantly enhancing patient comfort.

In my clinical practice, silicone tampons are not utilized in approximately 90% of cases. Instead, I employ surgical techniques to mitigate the risk of complications during surgery.

However, there are instances where silicone tampons are deemed essential for patient care.

The following section elucidates the reasons behind my decision not to utilize silicone tampons.

Typically, within the initial three days following surgery, nasal swelling occurs. This swelling resolves spontaneously within the third day.

It simplifies the cleaning process and increases patient comfort and patients do not experience anxiety because there is no tampon removal process.
